The department aims to develop leading-edge materials researchers with strong R&D, leadership and planning skills and abundant creativity. Such people will draw on a tradition predating the establishment of the university and will have wide-ranging specialized learning grounded in leading-edge basic science, which they will use to develop a wide variety of organic materials and contribute to the emergence of a sustainable growing society.

First-year students learn general materials science based in chemistry, physics and mathematics. In the second and third years, they acquire wide knowledge and general skills through lectures and experiments in their core specialty of materials science and in physical chemistry, organic chemistry, electricity science, information processing and more. In the fourth year, they begin their bachelor's degree thesis research under the direction of advising faculty. They get a taste of cutting-edge research through experiments and discussions
